September 2006 Archives

...is up to about three at work. I know I posted a bit about it from work yesterday, but I'm not done bitching.

I managed to run off one of the guys Monday morning. Not bad for having been there six days at this temporary store. He apparently was not all he could be, or in other words, he was a piece of crap. They had taken him off the schedule, but unfortunately whoever was running the store before I got there Wednesday had an hourly associate fire him, which was a big no-no. Then they made him pay back $26 in cash that he had probably stolen anyway. We don't take cash from our associates, no matter what. The grandmother got involved, called the division manager, and he kept his job. I decided he needed retraining. He never called or came in to check his schedule, just shows up for work at 7AM Saturday morning, at which point I sent him home. I don't generally train on weekends, and I had him scheduled to come in Monday morning. I let him and his dad know that he was going to be retrained, and possibly trained as a cook, because I thought he would do alright, and I wanted him to be successful. Yeah. Anyway, he shows up Monday morning and immediately cops an attitude because I wanted to retrain him (even though I had made that clear two days prior) and clocked in and stood around on the floor talking on the cell phone, I guess to get in touch with my division manager. I gave him about 15 minutes and told him that he could either put his hat on and start working with the waitress that was going to train him, or he could clock out and get off the floor. He opted for the latter, and so all I have to put on his separation notice is "quit with no notice". Always nice to have for a job reference.

There was another girl that was apparently just running off the customers and stealing as well. I took her off the schedule my first day and haven't heard from her since.

The third one was yesterday. They had hired this girl that should never been hired in the first place. My boss had tried to put her to work a few weeks prior, at MY old store, and I nixed that idea, so apparently she put her at the one I am running for the month. She worked sat around on her fat ass for four days, then yesterday she was supposed to come in at 4PM and cook until 9. I was going to cook until she got there. At 3:30 she called and said she was going to be late. When I pressed her for an exact time she told me 5PM. OK, I can deal with that. Even though I had to be back at shift change (9PM) that would give me enough time to come home, shower, and see everyone. At 5:30, she called back and said that she wasn't coming in. I told her that I had already figured that part out and had covered it. I hadn't covered it, but that's none of her fucking business. The thing that most of my employees at my old store figured out in about three days is that I don't work unscheduled doubles, seconds, or thirds. Fuck that noise. Over the last three years, I have worked a grand total of maybe three second and third shifts (scheduled). I also worked maybe two unscheduled shifts because I was hung (literally and figuratively). Both of those people were terminated on the spot. I require a six hour notice if you want to call in, UNLESS it is an emergency. Shit happens, I know that and will always make allowances for it. People that miss more than two or three days a year don't work for me very long. Sometimes it takes a while to get the right staff, but once I do, I keep them. Anyway, like I said, I don't work fucking doubles. She's fired, and I don't actually fire very many people. Now I have about seven shifts to cover this coming week (schedule starts tomorrow). No big deal, I should have it staffed by Thursday.

There are at least three more that are going to have to go before I leave and open my new store. I promised the manager trainee that will be taking that store that I will fix some of her problems before she gets it. She is pretty nice, and I don't want a bunch of crap floating around taking advantage of her.

I'm also in the process of getting ready to open the new store. Picked up the paperwork for the business license today, and set up the bank account as well. It looks like they may be putting in the parking lot in the next few days, at which point I will spend a few evenings up there with some applications. The have bumped up the number of people they want me to hire twice over the last month, now they want 45. This may be the busiest fucking store I have ever run. Good deal, as that translates into more $$$ for my creditors. I think I am going to open on October 26th now, so blogging may be light for a couple of weeks after that, as we will run 24 hour management at least for a week. Who the fuck am I trying to kid. I'll still blog, just give up sleep for awhile.

I also went in this morning even though it was my day off so that I could get some paperwork done and make a bank deposit. I had also set up a catering order for 30 people and didn't want my boss to get stuck cooking it by herself. Finally got home around noon. So much for my first day off this week.

Anna is testing for the Academic team at school today, so I'll be picking her up late, then have to have her back there by 6:30 for some kind of a performance at the PTO meeting. Damn, it's going to be a long one.

In other asshole news, I was over at Howtokillpeople.com and ran across this little piece of art that made me laugh my ass off. Now, I don't take tragedy lightly, and think it is horrible that Steve Irwin is dead, but other than that I have to make fun of someone, so here it is:

Hehe, perfect. I need a T-Shirt with that on it.

Since I was going to be leaving my store next month anyway, and we already had my replacement trained, "they" decided to put me in another store for a month that needs fixing. Damn, but it's slow as shit here.

They have spent the last 20 months running off all of the business and have done a real good job of it. The store has basically been left to a bunch of 16-20 year olds to do whatever the hell they want.

I've already managed to run off a couple of people, and am bringing on a couple of my former employees. There are about five others that I am going to try and replace before I leave as well.

All I know is that I am working even harder here doing half the business. It's a complete goatfuck here.

But it does give me the occasional minute to blog.

For some reason we are watching some kind of show on fire ants on Discovery, or one of those channels. One of the ways that these ranchers are combating the spread is using these flies that are the ants natural enemies. The guy doing the commenting describes the maggots turning into flies :like a zombie air force rising from the grave". Naturally I thought of Eric.

Update - If you actually want an explanation of the flies and what they do, you can find it here. My favorite part is still the line in the title though.

Technorati :

This is just too damn weird. I already have three pain in the ass kids, why would I want more? Makes me think of all the movies where the dolls kill someone, usually the first chick that shows her tits.

Technorati :

...but I can't get that damn crab song out of my head. It's been banging around in those empty spaces for a few days now. Damn, I've gotta find something else just slightly less stupid to take my mind off of it.

Dax posted a bit earlier about progressive rock over at his site, with a small offering as well. As much as I am into the hard stuff, and classic rock, I absolutely love progressive rock from the '60s and '70s. I grew up listening to ELP, King Crimson, and Hawkwind to name a few. I commented over there that I was listening to In the Court of the Crimson King: 30th Anniversary Edition. Even though King Crimson remained a great band I loved the stuff that Greg Lake did with them. He did two albums (three if you count the two-disc Epitaph released in 1997) with them before ELP, In the Court of the Crimson King, and In the Wake of Poseidon. The first was most definitely the best. What pisses me off is that none of them can be found at the itunes store.

It's pretty hard to find some stuff on the internet (like videos from the late '60's, but I managed to come up with this short flick called "The Janitor" put together by a dude that uses 21st Century Schizoid Man as the soundtrack.

Very cool.

Technorati : , , , ,

This next month is going to be harder than I thought. It is a much slower store, so should be like a vacation. I can only wish. A couple of poorly trained employees, a couple with bad attitudes, and a couple more that know everyfuckingthing. Damn. They have a few good ones, they are just in need of someone to give them directions. In my first two days there I've pissed off at least four of them, taken two off the schedule completely. On the bright side though, I haven't noticed any with pill issues, at least not at work. Bonus.

Technorati :

I have to go back today. It's going to be a long one. I start at my old store, have to close the weekly payroll, do audits and inventories and such checking myself out and the new manager in. Then I head to the new store that I will spend about three weeks in, and check IN, doing more audits and inventories. I'll spend part of the day cooking, then have a couple of interviews to do for the store I will be in next month. Damn. Then I have to drive out to the damn Galleria for a meeting at 3:45 this afternoon until 6:30. Cool, I get to go home in rush hour traffic in Cobb County.

Something is still weird with my site. I can get to it, then I can't. I am starting to gt pissed off. It was up for a little while yesterday, but this makes the better part of a day that it has been down. Guess I will just save this post until I get home tonight. Then I can bitch about what a long day it HAS BEEN :) rather than how long it is going to be. It's all the same anyway.

Damn, the site was down this morning. I wrote the above this morning about 5am. Just got home after a 16 hour day. Don't think I will do any posting other than answering a few comments.

I found this pretty interesting. Why is it that when I go to CNN to see what those Islam fundamentalists guys are doing, the stories that are top news are stuff like "Updated on Space Station Status" and "First Female Space Tourist Blasts Off". I have to scroll way the fuck down to the bottom of the page just to find anything even remotely related to them, or the reaction to the Pope.

...I'm glad you asked that. I am pretty much just trying to keep busy so that I don't take my happy ass to the store to buy smokes. Here's what's in the party shuffle right now.

The only reason I am posting this is because I wanted to have a permanent copy of it, and this seemed like a good place for it. I read Pope Benedict's address last week when all of the furor was just getting started and really didn't find much that was untrue in it. Still not sure why they are so getting bent out of shape about it except for the fact that sometimes people get really pissed off when they hear the truth.

If you want to read it at the Vatican's web site, you can find it here. You will find it in entirety in the extended entry.

Everyone at work gave me a going away party after 1st shift. They really didn't need to do that. I know that they are going to miss me, but I have managed so many of our restaurants that it is just no big deal to me. I tend to compartmentalize my life so that it and work do not intrude upon each other.

It was pretty cool though. They got me a little cake, so we all sat around and ate cake and chatted.

Here is the card that they gave me

They also gave me a Chia Homer, but something is screwed up with attaching it right now. Maybe I will post a pic of it later. Got a T-Shirt that says "Stop Looking at my Shirt".

I will miss some of them, but not all. Mostly it's just another place to work to me.

Technorati :

This has to be the longest day I have ever had. Damn, I want a smoke.

I did find out that Sunday will be my last day in this store. I will run another, slower one temporarily while I am hiring and training for the new one.

I found out why I can't sync my PocketPC with Outlook in Windows Vista RC1. For all of you inquiring minds that want to know why and when, here is the link. For all those that don't give a shit, that's OK, go back to surfing for porn.

Technorati : , ,

Well, still feeling like shit today. It was also truck day, which means a semi brings in about $6k worth of food, around 120 cases and I get to take the shit out of the boxes and put it up. Damn, I am dog tired.

I still got out of there at a decent time and picked up the small one at day care and came home. Stephanie is just going to have to pick up the others. I've already straightened the house and vacuumed, and did the couple of coffee cups that were left from this morning. All that is left to do is dinner and whatever chores the kids have to do. We may have to do take-out as I damn sure don't feel like cooking tonight. The only thing it is time for right now is a muscle relaxer and a bit of Lenny Kravitz.

Technorati :

I am thinking about upgrading someone to an iPod Nano for Christmas. I see that it has a screen for the menus, but does it actually list the song titles or just basic shit like Play, Pause, etc..?

I know some of you guys have to know something. I use my pocket pc as an mp3 player as I don't like carrying too much shit around. Sooner or later I will upgrade to a Palm Trio so that I can combine my phone with the pocket pc and camera. That will be sweet.

...at least I am happy right now. I pulled a 250gig hard drive out of my media PC and dumped it in my son's computer. Vista RC1 installed without a hitch. Still can't sync my iPaq, at least not with Outlook, but that's OK, couldn't do it with beta 2 either. Hopefully that will come soon. At least I can browse the web at my own desk, and not be in Stephanie's way. Now that she uses it a bit more, getting time on the PC between three people is a pain in the ass.

Went back to work today. What a pain in the ass. Five of my waitresses had not gotten their credit card tips for the last two days, and their were no signatures (I make them sign for them) so I had to come off with about 50 bucks. My boss is going to be none too happy, because she will end up paying for that one. I hated to do it, but had to give them the money.

My back is fucking with me again, as well as my blood pressure. I have never had a bp problem, but when I went to the doctor Friday morning before leaving for Helen, it was pretty high. He told me to track it for the next couple of weeks, as it could be cause by my back pain, so once again I am taking pain pills and muscle relaxers, which kind of sucks because I may have to go back to work tonight.

Shit happens I suppose.

We have a deal with Chris. He keeps his grades up, he keeps his computer. Progress reports came out Friday, so it looks like I will have a PC to use at least for the next four to five weeks. :)

What a coincidence. Windows Vista RC1 has been released. Just received an email from Microsoft with the download link. Guess I need to pop one of my other hard drives in this baby and go to town.

Whenever I am at home in the mornings AND Stephanie is able to wake me up I try to help get the kids ready. I have to walk the kids to the car and get them in. Every time I go out I always tell her and Chris to not lock the door. Of course being 17 he always has a smartassed remark as if I am stupid for telling him something like that.

He locked the door on me this morning. I'm standing outside with no fucking teeth in, shorts only, no shirt, no keys, no phone. Not a good scene. Luckily they were still in the street pulling out since they drop Anna off a few houses away to ride the bus. It would not have been good had I not caught them. I keep all of the windows locked when the air is on, but I am sure I could have found at least one unlocked, but just seeing my little fat half-naked ass climbing in through a window would definitely prompt someone to call the law I am sure.

At least there will be no more smart ass comments next time I tell him not to lock the door, otherwise I get to make retard sounds at him.

No, not for my wife, can't afford that right now. For the PVR. Apparently TVedia supports all of the cool stuff that I have been doing, plus will play iTunes protected music. I will have to check it out when I get back from the blog-meet this weekend.

Not much on right now that I watch since the season finale of Deadwood was come and gone, but I enjoy Battlestar Galactica, and apparently they've got some stuff going on over at sci-fi to get ready for the new season. Thanks to Jeff for the heads up.

...but not that kind.

A few days ago I picked up a PC from one of my former employees to work on. Her kids is also one of my wife's students, so I figured I would do them a favor. At one point in time, I had to clean out a bunch of viruses and spyware from my wife's computer. At that time, it was the worst infestation I had ever seen. I finally just backed up all of the documents and wiped the damn thing clean.

I don't have that option here unfortunately. One thing I hate when people bring me their computers is that I ask them to bring ALL of their installation CDs as well. No monitors, keyboards, mice, just the damn box and CDs. Of course, as is usually the case, she can't find her installation media. Luckily she still has her damn Windows sticker on the fricking thing. I thought I still had a copy of XP Home OEM here, but apparently not, so I had to find one before I could even get started. I did an install and chose the repair option, so that it would not delete any of the stuff that she needs saved.

I am on my 14th or 15th reboot after having scanned for viruses and spyware. I have actually seen more infected files on other computers, but this has been pretty difficult to get rid of. I am just about done thank goodness. The usual suspects were found. Kazaa media desktop. Just buy your fucking music legally. I hate it when people that don't know any better install kazaa along with it's wealth of spyware and proceed to download gigs of files, some of which are more spyware, trojans, and other wonderful viruses.

The person they took it to last (they had someone attempt to work on it before and were told that they just needed to format the hard drive) must have installed five or six different spyware programs, some of which are no fricking better than what they are supposed to be removing. I generally stick with Spybot, maybe Ad-Aware, and if they want something free for AV, I use AVG Free. Once that is finished I will install Windows Defender, and run all of the Windows updates.

It is simply amazing how much crap people put on their computer. As much shit as I download and I very rarely get a virus. My main problem is that I like beta testing software, so I will occasionally end up hosing my computer, but the difference is that I know it might end up this way and I am doing it on purpose.

I think I will put a sticker on top of their computer that says "DO NOT INSTALL KAZAA, EDONKEY, WEATHERBUG, ANYTHING THAT SAYS GATOR OR BARGAINBUDDY". Gator and bargainbuddy will install when you visit some web sites, but only if you let them. Bonzi Buddy also sucks.

Apparently the auditor is back at my store this morning. That's actually a good thing. My boss tends to try and manipulate numbers to make things look better than they are. For instance (and I am sure that is why the lady is there), I was off last Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday is the last day of the week. We close out our weekly numbers on Wednesday morning. My boss in her infinite wisdom took food $ off of her Tuesday food pull in the computer and added them to Wednesday. The end result of this is to make the food cost on the weekly report look good. The only problem is that it doesn't fix any problem. It just moves it to the next week and makes it that much harder to fix whatever the real problem is.

The good thing is that I trained the auditor about 18 years ago, and while not really friends, I respect her, and think she is smart enough to figure out what is going on, and to charge whatever shortages she runs to the rightful person. I also have her cell number and will call her shortly to make sure that she knows EXACTLY what is going on, because my boss will lie and throw me under the bus in order to protect herself. That kind of sucks because I like her, and she is supposed to be a friend.

Damn, I wish they had come before I went on vacation. That is the only thing that worries me.

Update - Well, everything was cool. I guess maybe I worry too much. I have seen too many people that work for my company get fucked by people with no integrity, and I always have it in the back of my head that I could get shit-canned any day. That's a pretty shitty feeling, considering how long I have been with them and how valuable I am to them.

Technorati :

I think that "Red Hot Poker of Love" is a much more apt description myself.

Technorati :

Once again I am on vacation. Even though I just had one a couple of months ago, this is much needed and if I am smart and keep my mouth shut I may be able to sneak an extra one in this year. Fuck 'em. After 20 years it's not going to kill them to give me some extra time off. I will end up needing one in a few months anyway. It's going to be a bitch to open the new store next month and have them ready for Christmas. One of my old bosses uses to call it our "Superbowl". He was right. Busiest fucking day of the year for me.

What's really nice is that I really don't have much planned for this week. I have to fix someone's PC today, and probably do a bit of housecleaning, but that is about it. I'll probably take the car up Friday morning and get an oil change for the trip. Oh yes, the week is going to culminate in the blogmeet in Helen. Luckily I don't have to be back at work until Tuesday, so that will give me an extra day to recuperate.

I still have a bunch of extra crap in my closet, motherboards, memory, etc... so I may try to put together a PC. Would be nice to have my own again. Using Stephanie and Anna's is OK, but it's not mine, and I can't mess with it. I pretty much put this one off limits to myself except for maintenance, that way I know it won't have any problems. No beta software, no testing. Damn, that sucks.

Technorati :

Actually that should read Big Dick's Dry Rub. Forgot my little apostrophe there. Bet you thought I was going to post something disgusting here.

I haven't ordered any yet, but I may have to. I love to rub my tenderloin and barbecue the little bastard to juicy perfection.

Technorati :

Freddie is much nicer than I am, and says that she tends to stay away from topics that might unnecessarily offend others. That's pretty cool I guess, but fuck that. I too have the tendency to open my mouth and speak about topics that might offend others, I just have no problem doing it. Even when I don't know what the fuck I am talking about.

WE ARE ALL RACISTS. Everyone. Anyone who claims to have NO biases or prejudices is either lying to you, or to themselves. It's just that some people have the bad taste to advertise their prejudices (fears) to everyone else around as if we give a fuck.

Maybe you are prejudiced against people that are a different color than you. Perhaps it's Jews. Or stupid fucking people. Or fat people. Or rednecks like me. Or poor people. Or people that have "blue collar" jobs. Or the chick at the 7-11 with the dot on her fucking head. Or homos. Whatever. Sometimes our prejudices take other forms, such as fear of different ideas, political leanings, war, peace. For us as Americans (generalization) it was blacks for a long time. During WWII, it was Asians. Then people of Spanish descent. The last few years it has been Muslims. Who gives a fuck. One of the managers that I like a lot, and trained last year is from Sri Lanka, so he shares a lot of the ethnic qualities of the towel-heads that I am so afraid will bomb my ass. Doesn't mean that I don't like him any less, it's just that I know him, and am comfortable with him. That's the way prejudice works.

The fact is that as humans we are generally scared of people and things that are different, and therefore uncomfortable. My parents raised me to pretty much have no prejudices, but somehow, they are still there. I find that the older I get, the worse they are. The fact that some people do nothing but live up to their stereotypes does nothing to lessen my biases.

Technorati :

Dammit. My iPaq has crapped out. I had it in my car earlier today listening to some music on the ride home and it locked up, now when I try to reset it, it just stays on the fucking reset screen forever. Maybe I can find some more info on HP's site, but I think it is a goner. Crap.

Unfortunately I have to go back to work in a bit, or I would try to take it apart and see if I could find something wrong.

Damn, now my site is down. That just blows. I hardly ever have any downtime there. Has to be the server, as I can't get to my cpanel either. Crapola. This will just have to sit in the drafts until later, but then again, by the time you see it, the server will obviously be back up. Guess I will just have to use Eric's blogroll for now :)
